Jamien Sherwood brings solid depth to the New York Jets’ defense

Coming out of Auburn as a safety, Jamien Sherwood was a project when the New York Jets selected him in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL draft. The Jets hoped to turn him into a linebacker at the NFL level, which would require plenty of development from the then-21-year-old.

Sherwood’s rookie year was cut short after only five games. In his second season, Sherwood played all 17 games but mainly contributed on special teams, as he only played 25 defensive snaps.

Going into year three, Sherwood’s future was up in the air. However, with the exit of Kwon Alexander in free agency, the door was open for Sherwood to win the Jets’ third linebacker spot, and that’s what he did.

The Jets didn’t use Sherwood as often as they used Alexander the previous year. Sherwood played 194 snaps across 17 games in 2023, or about 17% of the Jets’ defensive snaps. In the same spot on the depth chart one year earlier, Alexander played 559 snaps in 17 games (49%).

Still, Sherwood provided solid depth in his role. He finished the season with 46 tackles, a forced fumble, and a pass defended while only missing two tackles.

In the latest Blewett’s Blitz film review, we dive into Sherwood’s 2023 season to break down his strengths and weaknesses as he enters his fourth NFL season. Does he deserve more snaps? Can he be counted on as a future replacement for C.J. Mosley? The answers are all there on film.
